We’re overdue to examine the old paradigm that measures the success of one’s life. In my parents’ generation, it was all about what one did – the kind of money we made (the more the better), the amount and quality of our possessions, our achievements and levels of recognition, how well our kids turned out – need I say more?

More often these days, you may be shifting your view of success to encompass the following:

  1. Pursuing Your Passions
  2. Increasing the Level of Joy You Experience
  3. Becoming the Victor in Your Life

At a recent business networking event, this topic came up because the crowd was largely Baby Boomers. Two woman had quit steady jobs with good benefits and opened their own businesses. For them, it was all about the first measure of success in our new paradigm – Pursuing Your Passions.

Now it’s just as easy when following your passions as an independent business person to get sucked into the old measures of success. If that happens, you’re less likely to experience your desired level of joy. Plus you could become a victim of your goals or your success.

It’s possible to combine all three of the above, provided we keep them top of mind when making decisions. Will what I’m about to do serve all three? If it won’t, then perhaps it’s back to the drawing board for a re-think or a re-do.
